Rural Landscapes

Relocating from a large urban landscape to a rural environment was a paradigm shift of place identity. Organic forms, especially trees, have always been a particular interest of mine. The focus of some of these larger rural drawings became interplays of architectural and organic forms, symbolizing the cycle of life. The rural- based series sometimes include symbols and/or words derived from physics equations that are imbedded within the imagery. These equations represent a scientific model that strives to explain the origins of life. The cycle of life is portrayed in these drawings in the view of new growth as seen in relationship to decaying structures returning to nature. There is a focus on the intensity of light and color found in this rural southern region, but color is sometimes contrasted with stark white. These are all large drawings, executed in colored pencil and oil sticks, again on a medium rough substrate.
