Artist’s bio

Although I hold an M.F.A. in painting, I have worked in a variety of media. During my graduate school years, I executed cast rubber, vinyl and mixed media sculptures, some on a large scale. These led to producing sculptural “environments”. I received funding from the University of Wisconsin to execute and perform a series of performance pieces. As a designer for the Milwaukee Public Museum, I learned sculptural casting techniques and screen printing and produced drawing and screen printing combination works.  Later, I returned to large canvasses in acrylic and oil. For some years now I have been concentrating on drawing and mixed media incorporating ink, pencil, and oil pastels and oil sticks. I have also been working in pen and ink and watercolors. Two recent series are oil on canvas and a mixed media series of digitally manipulated prints.

As a professional artist, I have held positions in many capacities. I have been an exhibits designer, both full-time and free-lance. I was a free-lance commercial artist doing a variety of graphic design and layout work as well as illustrations for scientific publications, a book jacket illustrator for major publishers, and an administrator of a graphic arts program. I taught studio and lecture classes in art at the college level for many years. After moving south, I taught for some years in the department of art at East Carolina University where I am currently Professor Emeritus in the department of interior design.

I was fortunate to have lived as part of the art community in the SOHO district of New York City for thirty years. The experience of interacting with many major contemporary artists, art historians, cartoonists, commercial artists, photographers and writers on a personal level was profoundly enriching. My participation as a studio artist at Emerge Gallery in Greenville, N.C. gave me the opportunity to work in a local microcosm of the artist’s loft community.
